Yangon was a former capital untill 2006.
It is the main gateway to Myanmar.
It was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of a small village called Dagon when he conquered Lower Myanmar in 1755. In the colonial days, Yangon was anglicized to Rangoon.
In 2005, Nay Pyi Taw became the capital of the country, but Yangon remains the main commercial city. population about 6 million people.
