Mawlamyang is the capital of Mon state.

Donated by queen Seindon a much loved queen of king Mindon 1853-1878 who has many queens of various ranks,this monastery was originally her resident.she gave away much of her wealth to religious causes, including her mansion before she died in 1905 aged 69.

3771 stone graves of allied POWs who died building the railway.The name of the town is taken from a not-too-long rest house roofed with galvanized iron standing near the marketplace. A war memorial here holds the British, Australian, Dutch and Gurkha prisoners-of-war who died while constructing the infamous "death railway" under supervision of Japanese forces during the Second World War.
